I thought the market was losing this space this summer to make way for new apartments/condos. Whenever construction does begin, this year or next, it would be great to find a new location for the farmers market. Its really nice to have.
The construction will begin this year. When they will be allowed to get in and start all depends upon Wash Gas giving access. If they are allowed to go in April 1st than the market will have to quickly find another location. If it is June 1st, than at least they have time to find a location and tell people. Either way, it is the last year at that location.
I say, why not a section of the sidewalk and street along H Street? It would be fun foot traffic.
At the corner of 6th and I there is an unused Parking lot owned by the church across the street. Perhaps they would offer up the space, as an act of decency for not paying property taxes on a surface parking lots.
The construction will eventually displace the market, but it's going to open at its regular location. It will stay in the neighborhood, but it's not yet clear where. The city has not been especially helpful to them thus far. There will be a neighborhood meeting for market supporters to attend April 4th at 7:30 at the NE library (7th & D NE). There are a number of possible locations for it, but the city needs to be reasonable about what it asks a nonprofit to pay to use a school or Rec Center parking lots on a Saturday morning.
