This Weekend on H Street

Souk should have their bar up and running tonight. Hopefully the back dining room will be open as well. Liberty Tree now has the promised whole-bellied clams. These are sweet, delicious clams that make for the best fried clams.

The FreshFarm farmers' market reopens tomorrow. Look for Casey Patten of Taylor as the featured Chef at the Market around midmorning. The market will also feature new additions Red Apron Butchery, Dolcezza Gelato, and H Street's own Dangerously Delicious Pie. Metro Mutts is going to participate tomorrow as well. The market runs from 9-12 noon. There are some other events tomorrow night as part of the First Saturdays series that H Street Main Street is launching.

After the farmers' market, you can stop by Ethiopic, which opens at noon for lunch and congratulate Sam and Meseret and the birth of their first child, Noah. Their signature lamb tibs might be the tastiest thing you can get anywhere on H Street. While you are over that way, drop by Capitol Fine Wine and Spirits. They've gotten in almost all of the hard to find beers that folks have requested since openings, including four types of Bells and a Great Lakes beer. They have a really impressive beer selection now, including a few types of Ethiopian beers and a solid offering of inexpensive wines.

Just off H Street, Jimmy Valentines will be cooking up 90 lbs of bacon starting at 3 pm.

Toyland will be mixing up Mint Juleps in honor of Derby Day. They open at 5 and the race is at 6.

Saturday night, City Gallery has an opening reception for their latest exhibit starting at 6 pm.

There's a whole host of events on H Street on Saturday night, per usual, but especially in light of the First Saturday kickoff, so check out details about events at Palace of Wonders, Rock and Roll Hotel, Sova, and more here.

1108 H Street renovated and on the market

1108 H Street has been vacant in recent years, but is housed between Little Miss Whiskey's Golden Dollar (1104 H St) and the coming Asian restaurant in the historic Hubert Newsom Building (1110 H St) just down the block from the Credit Union, and Taylor Gourmet (1116 H St). If you've been down that block recently, you may have noticed construction going on at the front of this building. It has been largely renovated and is now for sale prepared to finish for use as restaurant/retail with a possible residential unit above.

The list price is $749,000. The location is great, but it will be interesting to see if a semifinished building merits that high of a price tag.

They also recently improved the seating in their main dining room by installing a bench with cushions, similar to what they have in the front window seats. If you haven't been to dine at Souk recently, you should do so again soon.

Streetcars in DC

From DDOT, you can check out the streetcars that will be running down H Street within a couple years in DC, May 5-8, at the Old Convention Center site.

First Modern Streetcar to Debut in the District

DDOT to Host DC Streetcar Showcase May 5-8
First Opportunity for Public to Board One of DC’s Modern Vehicles

District residents, workers and visitors will soon get their first opportunity to step aboard one of the District’s new modern streetcars. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will host the DC Streetcar Showcase from Wednesday, May 5 through Saturday, May 8, 2010 at City Center DC, the site of the old convention center.

“We are getting closer and closer to putting streetcars back on the streets of the District, and we know there are a lot of people who are just as excited about their return as we are,” said DDOT Director Gabe Klein. “This will be a great opportunity for them to see a modern streetcar up close, inside and out, and to learn more about how they will operate in the District.”

The District owns three streetcars, which are currently stored at Metro’s rail yard in Greenbelt, Maryland. For the showcase, DDOT will transport one of the vehicles downtown where it will be set on temporary tracks in Lot B of City Center DC. The public will be able to access the lot from the intersection of 9th and H Streets, NW, which is just north of the Gallery Place Metro station on the Green and Yellow lines.

Admittance to the Showcase is free. The event schedule is as follows:

· Wednesday, May 5, 11am – 7pm
· Thursday, May 6, 11am – 7pm
· Friday, May 7, 11am – 7pm
· Saturday, May 8, 11am – 5pm

The DC Streetcar Showcase will coincide with several other related events in the District, including:

In the first half of the last century, the District had a robust streetcar network with more than 200 miles of track, but as bus service became more prevalent, the popularity of streetcars declined and the last day of streetcar service in the city was January 28, 1962.

Today, plans are well underway to restore this rich piece of the District’s history. DDOT is developing a 37 mile, 8 line system, and construction on two of the lines has already started. Streetcar service is expected to begin in 2012 on H Street/Benning Road.

Mead Row Development (1305-1311 H St)

Meads Row (1305-1311 H St) has been the subject of much attention during the H Street renaissance over the past few years. The four rowhouses are adjacent to the historic Atlas Performing Arts Center, but recently at least two of them have largely not been put to good use. The row was built by Charles C. Meads, “a local builder of note,” who was also responsible for some 105 structures on Capitol Hill. The buildings are among the oldest and nicest ones constructed along H Street.

Unfortunately, the buildings at 1309 and 1311 H Street have been unused in recent years and the owners of the properties sought to raze them and build a small parking lot in their place. This effort was readily opposed by the surrounding community and ANC6A sought to have them declared historic by the Historic Preservation Board. The ANC and the surrounding community felt that they were particularly good examples of the corridor's historic stock of first floor retail with two levels of residential housing above them and were located as an especially important spot in the heart of the Atlas/Entertainment District on H Street. That effort narrowly failed on a divided vote last year. That was presumed to be the end of that battle with the demolition and razing in advance of a tiny parking lot or otherwise wasted space just a matter of time.

However, the owners of the buildings recently sought and obtained permits to renovate and rehab both properties and construction is now underway to restore both properties to their prior glory. The precise plans have not yet been announced, but a restaurant or retail is expected to fill the first floor with residential on the upper levels as was the case for these buildings in their historic heyday. This makes great sense given the extreme level of interest for opening new businesses along H Street, especially along its eastern end.

Congratulations to ANC6A Commissioner David Holmes who led the effort to save these buildings and to the business owners on the 1200 and 1300 blocks of H Street whose successful openings helped convince the owners of these properties to renovate and rehabilitate rather than to raze. Once these buidings are reopened with new establishments on their ground level, the south side of the 1300 block will start with the new restaurant(s), followed by the Atlas Performing Arts Center, H Street Country Club, Dangerously Delicious Pies, Star and Shamrock, Rock and Roll Hotel, Biergarten Haus, Sova, and the H Street Playhouse and that block will give a real sense of the renaissance that so many hope to see completed on the rest of the corridor soon.

City Gallery: Light and Allusion opening reception: Sat. May 1, 6-9 pm

City Gallery (804 H St) will hold the opening reception for its May exhibition “Light and Allusion” showcasing Nancy Donnelly’s elegant glass art and Jill Finsen’s whimsically primitive paintings executed in oil paint with the artists Saturday, May 1, 6:00–9:00 PM.

Fascination with color is apparent in the work of both these artists. These pieces sing out - they raise the possibility that good humor can be engendered by color alone. Allusive of the natural world, they are at the same time direct and accessible. Surface is paramount to the success of these art pieces—the smoothness of the glass contrasts with layered textures in the paintings. The colors of glass and paintings complement each other and pull the exhibit in new and exciting visual directions. Both artists find negative space crucial to this effect, moments of rest that energize each work. Donnelly and Finsen’s works provide tension between familiarity and abstraction and at the same time question placement within imagined space.

The exhibit runs through May 29 and is otherwise viewable Fridays & Saturdays from 1-5 p.m. or by appointment.

The Hill Newspaper loves Liberty Tree

Another rave review for Liberty Tree (1016 H St). One must-order item the review missed is the Clams Casino Pizza. Another is the Lobster Roll. It's not a big menu, but there's a lot to like at Liberty Tree.

WP: Old Settler at the Atlas is satisfying: funny, affecting, and inhabited by characters who seem like real people.

This morning's Washington Post has this favorable review for Old Settler which is currently running at the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H St). The show runs Thursdays through Sundays until May 15. Tickets are available online.

Caps Games on H Street

The Caps are in the middle of the first round of what will hopefully be a long run up to the Stanley Cup. If you can't get tickets to the games, you can catch them at the Red and the Black (1212 H St) where they are running a Puck Off PBR special with $3 PBRs during the game, and $1 Rock the Red shots every time the Capitals score. They'll also have some givewaways for true die-hard fans through the rest of the first round (4/21, 4/23, 4/26....)

Streetcars update, coming early 2012

The ANCs, Tommy Wells, and DDOT put on a pretty interesting meeting last night to approximately 100 attendees regarding streetcar development on H Street. The short of it is that there is real reason to expect the streetcars to be running from Union Station at 1st Street up through a hole in the hopskotch bridge and down H Street to Benning Road by early 2012. At the meeting, they showed the plans for punching a hole in the middle of the bridge, the connection to Union Station at 1st and H, where the maintaince facilities are (under the bridge) and a turn around at Benning Road/Oklahoma Ave, and explained that everything should be fully operational by Spring 2012. They also talked a lot about their expansion efforts and there will likely be a technology showcase for wireless/wire systems in the next few months.

Greek restaurant coming to 1220 H Street this summer

There are now plans to open a Greek Mezze restaurant (small plates served tapas style) at 1220 H Street this summer. The owner is a DC area native who comes from a large Greek family and who is very excited about the rapidly growing H Street dining scene. The restaurant name is yet TBD, but it will fill the first and second floors of the building for dining and house a large kitchen in the basement. The address is currently vacant, but is largely renovated, so you should look for it to open some time this summer. This should be a welcome addition on the 1200 block for the throngs of Granville Moore's and Sticky Rice fans who don't have the patience to wait in line for those popular H Street eateries on busy weekend nights.

Reminder: Streetcar meeting tonight at 6:30

Reminder that the Streetcar meeting hosted by local ANCs, Councilmembers Tommy Wells and Harry Thomas, Jr., and DDOT Director Gabe Klein and Streetcar Director Scott Kubly will be tonight at 6:30 at 1299 Neal Street (just north of Florida Ave, near 13th Street.

This will be your best opportunity to join with those officials in support of the semi-wireless plan they have to get the streetcars up and running soon. The tracks are already mostly laid along the north side of H Street and city officials have said they hope to have the cars in place and ready for use running from Union Station to the eastern end of the H Street Corridor by 2012, but a couple smaller groups have expressed opposition to streetcars recently claiming to be concerned that the any overhead wires might obstruct views of the city's varied historical monuments and of the U.S. Capitol.

ANC6A Chair Kelvin Robinson running for Council At-Large seat currently held by Phil Mendelson

As expected, ANC6A Chair Kelvin Robinson, the former Chief of Staff to Mayor Anthony Williams, will run for the D.C. Council seat currently held by Phil Mendelson. Former Fenty Department of Parks and Recreation Director Clark Ray is also running in the Democratic primary.

Mendelson has been widely criticized for his role as the Chairman of the Public Safety Commmittee where he has opposed significant aspects of the Mayor's Crime bill, including stricter gun laws, stronger penalties for juvenile crime, and anti-gang measures.

According to the head of DC's police union: “There’s soft on crime, there’s softer on crime, then there’s Phil Mendelson.” This should make for an interesting and well-contested race.

Studio H launches Rod Glover "Ungrounded" Saturday 6-9 pm

Studio H (408 H St) will host the opening reception for "Ungrounded" by Rod Glover on Saturday, April 17, from 6 - 9 p.m. The show will run through May 12.

More info on the exhibition is reproduced below:

Rod Glover's paintings simplify the complexities of life without the need for representational depictions. He constructs his work using abstract shapes and color. "Abstract shapes have undeniable power. The orientation or action of a shape evokes conflict, balance, anxiety or harmony. In shapes we perceive ourselves, and they become the archetypes of existence" explains Glover. The shapes in Glover’s work seem to float in space that he imagines to be infinite. The forms are in movement through time. The shapes speak of many things: relationships, solitude, confrontation, awakening, joy, stillness, order or chaos.

Glover's work is influenced by early geometric or reductive abstractionists. Painters such as Kandinsky, Malevich and Moholy-Nagy used geometric shapes to reject illusionist practices in the belief that shapes could convey expressive feelings and ideas without the need for recognizable or objective forms.

The paintings are built through many layers, beginning with a basic foundation of color. Portions of the foundation are masked and masking is added in each successive layer to retain areas of that specific color and to introduce new elements to be preserved throughout the process. The visual and physical texture of the work is extremely important. The ability to see layers of paint, to see how abrasions reveal what has come before, all heighten the depth of field. This richness of surface, imperfect, aged, sometimes scratched or pocked, creates an acknowledgement of time and change.

WP Dining Critic Tom Sietsema likes Ethiopic (401 H St)

The below First Bite review of Ethiopic (401 H St) runs in today's Washington Post.

First Bite: Ethiopic in the Atlas District of Northeast

By Tom Sietsema
Wednesday, April 14, 2010; E03

Meseret Bekele and her husband, Samuel Ergete, kept having the same reaction to the many Ethiopian restaurants they explored in Washington and elsewhere: "We liked some things, and we were disappointed in others," says Bekele, a financial aid officer at Johns Hopkins University. "We always talked about how we would do it" if they had a place of their own.

Now they do. It's called Ethiopic, and it's located where the couple reside, in the ever-more-colorful Atlas District. What was formerly a drug rehabilitation center is now an attractive backdrop for salads and stews eaten with pieces of injera, the pleasantly sour Ethiopian pancake. Paintings and sculptures collected by Bekele from a trip back home last year give the brick-walled space the feel of an art gallery. Alcoves are set with Ethiopian basket-tables. Letters of the Ethiopian alphabet crawl across the columns. A small bar graces the rear.

One visit to the corner storefront isn't enough to make decisive judgments, but on the basis of a few dishes at Ethiopic, I can say that this is food with real personality. Chicken legs sauteed in seasoned butter and cloaked in a gravy of sweet onions, ginger, garlic and more make for a memorable doro aletcha wat, while raw minced beef spiked with mitmita, the fiery Ethiopian spice blend, and tamed with house-made cottage cheese yields a tartare of distinction. Even the dedicated carnivores at my table were helping themselves to seconds and thirds of the vegetarian sampler decorated with red and yellow lentil purees, cabbage salad and zesty collard greens.

Bekele and Ergete, a former data processor, hired Almaze Endale to cook for Ethiopic. She brings past experience at Dukem and Zed's, among other restaurants, to her latest gig.

Her employers have set the bar high. Bekele aspires to serve food "as close to what we used to eat back home" as they can.

WP: Let's Get (the streetcars) Rolling

Today's Washington Post editorializes in favor of the current plan to get the streetcars running from Union Station and down H Street using a mix of wireless battery and overheard wires in early 2012.

The local ANCs, Councilmembers Wells and Thomas, and DDOT Director Klein and Streetcar Director Kubly will be at a public meeting on streetcar development on April 20. This should be a good opportunity to join with those officials in support of the semi-wireless plan they have to get the streetcars up and running soon.

Still More Coming Soon (update)

The past couple months have had a ton of openings on H Street.

From Capitol Fine Wine & Sprits (415 H St), to Toyland (421 H St), to Liberty Tree (1016 H St), to City Gallery (804 H St), to Ethiopic (401 H St), to Metro Mutts (508 H St), to Dangerously Delicious Pies (1339 H St).

So, what's next in the weeks and months ahead?

Biergarten Haus (1355 H St) still hopes to open before the end of the month. Hopefully, their enormous beer garden, which can hold over 300 people, will be open just in time to take full advantage of our beautiful Spring weather.

The Star and the Shamrock (1341 H St) is close behind. It seems that DC red tape has slowed them somewhat, but they've been working feverishly to get up and running. Best bet seems to be some time in May at this point.

More critical acclaim for Toyland (421 H St), H Street

Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema shares his enthusiasm for all the new spots on H Street in his online chat today. Tom is especially excited about Toyland's cocktails.
Tom Sietsema: Funny. I strolled by [soon-to-open Biergarten Haus] just last night. The space looks very impressive.

I'm digging what's going on in the Atlas District these days. I lost track of the number of places I'm eager to check out.

Hot Tip Du Jour: My fave new bar is a place called Toyland on H St. NE. It's not very big, but it brims with early-60s charm and the clientele is refreshingly mixed: bikers, thirtysomethings, groups of ladies, gay guys, blacks, whites, Asians ... Plus, the drinks are GREAT and not too expensive. Four of us popped in not long ago and got a round of fun for $35. Go, go, go (but not all at once, please.)

Link roundup

The Express says H Street -- especially Sova (1359 H St) -- is a great place to avoid the tourist crowds.

It appears that logistics are not yet complete, but the proposal is to transform the vacant Library Kiosk into a temporary innovation lab for creatives, technologists and citizens to experiment with new things for at least a 10 day period. It will be interesting to see what happens here and what use is made of that space going ahead.

Little Miss Whiskey's Golden Dollar (1104 H St)

Pros:
-Gorgeous renovated, interestingly decorated interior
-Awesome bottled beer list with U.S. micro brew focus
-Very friendly bartenders who make a point of learning your name and introducing you to others
-Good (if limited) food options weeknight's until 10 pm, usually including a soup and a handful of sandwich options which come hot off the grill.
-Various popular entertainment options including DJs, trivia night, karaoke, whiskey tastings, etc
-Convenient location at 11th and H St for the many customers who live to the west of the main H Street entertainment district

Cons:
-No wines at all. Why not keep at least one bottle of white on hand for nonbeer drinkers?
-Cool, unaltered rowhouse front does not improve the appearance of the cooridor -- maybe a fresh coat of paint would help even if they wont hang a sign?
