Biergarten Haus: opening in April at 1355 H Street
Aaron McGovern and Arturas Vorobjovas of Russia House in Dupont Circle will open Biergarten Haus, a German restaurant and a large outdoor beer garden in April at 1355 H Street (sharing walls with SOVA and Rock & Roll Hotel).
The restaurant assumes the two buildings that previously covered 1355 and 1357A H St and will in full cover thousands of square feet with seating for 70. The beer garden will offer another couple thousand square feet out back. The summer garden will features a variety of trees, plants, and vines, which will provide asthetic appeal and natural sound mitigation. Seating is expected for as many as 150 outside.
Although they are seeking a Class C-Tavern license, McGovern states that Biergarden will focus heavily on food sales. The menu will offer a variety of schnitzels, krauts and brats. Biergarten also owns the building downstairs of Sova's second floor lounge, which will be used to provide takeout and catering. The beer list will include a dozen taps to be available in three sizes. They plan to feature Euro-soccer, rugby, and the World Cup on the second floor and will eventually offer a full weekend brunch. They also intend to offer live accordion and polka music inside.
Biergarten has already signed up to participate in the recently launched reimburseable security detail and does not operate in close proximity to residential homes, so it appears likely that they will be good neighbors to the surrounding area.

"hundreds of thousands of square feet"? Um, I think that's not quite right...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nichole. This website clearly needs a better editor...
ReplyDeleteHey, don't get me wrong - a couple hundred thousand feet of beer garden a few blocks away would absolutely rock my world!
ReplyDeleteTell them to get some Ayinger on tap!
ReplyDelete2010 World Cup in HD at walk distance local Biergarten with Pils on tap?! My futbol cup runneth over....
ReplyDeleteI hope this is an authentic German beer garden with oopmah band and singing along to songs one doesn't know with drunken strangers!
ReplyDeleteJust bought a place in the neighbor and I'm thrilled of the new places popping up. If the Russia House owners are investing in the H St, just wait, Jamal Douglas will soon enough and things will begin to really grow!
ReplyDeleteYay! About time DC got a beer garden! Nothing better than enjoying a beer in a viney beer garden on a balmy summer night!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I'd be a little hesitant to aim for the truly "authentic" slant of oompah bands and sing-alongs - they usually end up being kitschy. (Even in Germany and Austria that style of beer garden is aimed largely at tourists, except for on special occasions.)
Fantastic news! I have been looking forward to this place opening up for some time.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: What is a "reimbursable security detail"?
