Maketto touted in WP Fall Dining Guide & now taking reservations

Maketto (1351 H St) has been one of my favorite spots since before it opened and exceeded my expectations since.  If you've been around H Street at all, you've long known that Erik Bruner Yang is a tremendous talent and a great chef.  If you came to the H Street Farmers' market in recent years, you knew that Erica Skonick makes world class croissants.  If you visited one of their popups or the roaster in Hyattsville, you knew that Chris Vigilante and his crew make a mean cup of coffee and roast some terrific beans.  And, if you've been since it opened, you know that Maketto blends all these elements together with some terrific cooking in the kitchen by Chef James Wozniak and various stylish offerings from Durkl to produce a pretty awesome place to be at 7 am, 7 pm and all times in between.

The Washington Post's Food Critic Tom Sietsema lavished Maketto with well-deserved praise in his recent review and has now crowned Maketto with a spot in his Fall Dining Guide.  Conveniently for everyone who loves the food there or who is looking for a chance to dine there soon, Maketto is now accepting reservations via phone at (202) 838-9972.  If you haven't been for a full dinner yet, now is your chance to make plans to go.

The Argonaut turns 10 & will celebrate a decade of awesomeness on H Street this Saturday afternoon

Happy Birthday, Argonaut!  Hard to believe it, but the granddaddy of H Street's revival and everyone's favorite neighborhood gathering spot (co-owned and co-managed by one of the finest H Street neighborhood households around) is turning 10.

Join Scott, Shaaren, Ara, the rest of the Argo team and your neighborhoods for a fun celebration on Saturday starting at 2 pm.  They'll have drink specials, give aways, and unveil a new house beer (we hear it's being brewed by a highly regarded craft brewery).  Argonaut recently added some new outdoor seating and a new outdoor bar as well, so if you haven't been recently, this is a good excuse to check those out as well.

ANC6A hosting education forum with local schools, CM Charles Allen & Bd of Ed Rep Joe Weedon, Thursday, September 10, 7 pm @ Miner Elem (601 15th St NE)

ANC6A will host an education forum with our local public schools, Councilmember Charles Allen and State Board of Education Representative Joe Weedon at our monthly meeting on Thursday, September 10, at 7 pm, at Miner Elementary (601 15th St NE).  Principals and parent leaders from our community schools, including Eliot-Hine, Maury, Miner, SWS, Ludlow-Taylor, and Eastern will be present to participate in this community conversation.

This is a great opportunity for our schools to share about their programs and areas that we as a community can assist them.  It's also a great opportunity for community members to learn more about your neighborhood schools and to learn how you can support them and get involved in them now.
Our schools are one of our community's most important assets and ANC6A wants to ensure that we are doing everything we can to facilitate greater support for and communication with our local schools.  This forum is the first step in that process.  If you have questions about our neighborhood schools and are interested in getting involved at them, please contact me our your single member district commissioner.

I hope you can join us next week.

Sallys Middle Name offering free ESOL classes to help non-English-speaking restaurant employees on H Street

Beginning September 2, Sally's Middle Name (1320 H St) will be offering a free 8 week, hour long, weekly ESOL class.  The goal of this course will be to help educate non-English-speaking restaurant employees on the H Street corridor in order to better their work environment and allow them to further their careers without the hindrance of a language barrier.

While there are many free ESOL classes offered around the city, few cater to the schedule and needs of people in the restaurant industry. Sally's hope that this class will provide a learning environment that is both convenient and beneficial to those who need it most.

If you're interested in the class, please contact aphra@sallysmiddlename.com
