FreshFarm H St Market returns Saturday w/ four new vendors including Chris' Marketplace & Number 1 Sons

The FreshFarm H Street Farmers Market returns tomorrow morning at 9 am.  Frenchie's will not be there with croissants at the opening bell now that she's settled into her permanent home within Maketto at 1351 H Street, but there are four new food purveyors joining the farmers and ranchers who've been at the market the past several years.  Number 1 Sons has been at Union Market in the past and Chris' Marketplace is a staple at the Dupont Circle and Penn Quarter FreshFarm markets.  Their crab cakes and soups are terrific, so they will be a great addition to our little market.

MISFIT Juicery - MISFIT Juicery is a company that uses surplus fruits and veggies that would otherwise go to waste because they are misshapen or slightly damaged, and turns them into delicious, cold-pressed juice. MISFIT Juicery envisions a world where produce prejudice is a footnote in history, where the nationwide conversation on food waste gets loud, where all tasty produce finds a place in our bellies and where the masses march alongside the MISFITs!

Cowbell Kitchen - Featuring a breakfast menu that evolves seasonally, Cheryl Strasser of Cowbell Kitchen sources the freshest ingredients from neighboring H Street market farmers. Inspiration comes from a balance of classic rustic comfort foods along with the current trends. Enjoy the biscuits, jams, sandwiches and pastries all homemade and carefully crafted with love. This weekend don't miss her bacon, jalapeno and provolone stuffed breakfast biscuit sandwiches - YUM!

Number 1 Sons -Number 1 Sons is a brother and sister team in Arlington, VA making barrel fermented foods. They work to combine regional ingredients with traditional fermentation methods and recipes from diverse cultures. Look for the giant pickle at their stand and stock up on their kimchi, sauerkraut, pickles, dilly beans and other fermented foods!

Chris' Marketplace -Chris' Marketplace is a small food business, focused on value-added seafood products, including crab cakes plus seafood , meat and vegetable filled empanadas. Located just north of Washington, DC, the business has access to the freshest seafood available. Chef/owner Chris Hoge goes directly to the source when purchasing his high-quality Blue Crab meat procuring much of his seafood from the family-owned Rippons Brothers Seafood, founded in 1947 and located on Hooper's Island, MD.

Maketto opens tomorrow w/ Vigilante coffee Frenchies Croissants, Durkl & Erik Bruner-Yang & you're going to want to be there

It's been a long time coming, but Maketto arrives in its permanent home with all its amazing parts and components tomorrow at 1351 H Street NE.  Maketto offers and array of shopping, eating, and drinking opportunities from its 7 am opening until its late night close.

Maketto is the first delivery from the Fundrise brainchild spawned by Ben and Dan Miller who also own the Autozone property and a few others buildings along H Street.  The project is in part funded through small investments from many neighborhood residents through Fundrise.

At the outset, Maketto was slated to combine the forces of Toki Underground's Chef-owner and rising culinary star Erik Bruner-Yang and the fashion offerings of stylish menswear brand Durkl.  If you've been to Toki Undergroud, you know Erik is an amazing chef and if you were lucky enough to visit the Maketto pop up at the Hanoi House a year or two back or have visited their stall at Union Market more recently, you have some sense of what his chef partner James Wozniuk and he are capable of and may offer at Maketto.  The duo produced some of the best meals we've had in recent years during the Maketto pop up at the Hanoi House and the various soups, sandwiches, and bao they've been putting out at Union Market since then have been terrific as well.

Maketto will also feature another neighborhood resident and small business owner in its coffee operations which come via Vigilante Coffee.  Chris Vigilante started running a small coffee roasting operation here and has grown from pop up cafes and Eastern Market weekend market offerings into a larger roasting and bean importing operation that also has another cafe in Hyattsville.  We haven't made it to the cafe roastery yet, but Vigilante's involvement at Maketto instantly puts their caffeinated offerings up there with DC's best coffee shops.

In an amazing development, Maketto will  also feature world class croissants from Frenchies DC.  Frenchies has been operating out of the H Street Freshfarm Farmers Market the past couple years and draws a tremendous crowd there, typically selling out of some of the finest croissants you'll find in the United States or elsewhere within minutes of the market's opening bell.  Between one of her croissants, one of Erik and James's char siu bao and a cup of coffee or a flat white from Chris and crew with Vigilante, you really can't start you're day much better.  Unless you're really gluttonous and want to swing by Bullfrog Bagels and Dangerously Delicious pies afterwards.  Seriously, has any block ever offered so much deliciousness to start the day?

Maketto opens tomorrow at 7 am.  We can't wait.

Star & Shamrock's "Passover & Easter Lamb-a-palooza" Weekend

Let My People Go...to the Star and Shamrock’s
“Passover Meets Easter Lamb-a-palooza”

Easter is linked to Jewish Passover by more than just yearly calendar proximity. In many languages, the words for "Easter" and "Passover" are identical, with both symbolically celebrating spring, hope, and rebirth, regardless of religion. In their long-continued tradition of bringing together people, cultures and religions, Star and Shamrock (1341 H St) plans to again make this connection with their first-ever “Lamb-a-palooza” Easter Meets Passover holiday weekend celebration.

The festivities begin Friday, April 3 and run through Sunday, April 5, with non-traditional Passover Seder dinners, holiday-inspired brunches, and specialty cocktails. Friday and Saturday night’s multicultural Seder Plate-mirroring dinner menu features classic Matzo Ball Soup, a garden-fresh Romaine & Green Onion Salad with Spicy Horseradish Dressing, savory Herb-Roasted Lamb Chops served with Sauteed Swiss Chard & Shallots, Roasted Rosemary Potatoes, a Pickled Egg, Fruit & Honey Haroset and--with a final nod to the no-flour Passover tradition, freshly baked house-made Matzo Bread. Saturday and Sunday morning’s Brunch menu continues to play on both holidays, featuring Jewish & Irish hybrid dishes such as Beef Salami & Eggs, House-Smoked Salmon with Eggs, Tomatoes & Onion, Lamb Sausage & Egg Irish Breakfast, a “Sunny Side Up” Lamb Burger, Cream Cheese Omelets and Matzo Brei. And to wash it all down Star and Shamrock Bar Manager, Gene Barnett, will be unveiling his Irish whiskey and Manischewitz “Guilt Chaser” craft cocktail.
