We (Capitol Hill resident Raleigh Clemens and Bending Bridge Farm) are teaming up once again to make delicious produce available in your neighborhood.

We offer locally grown certified organic produce year-round and hope that you'll join us for 2014. CSA shares are delivered each Wednesday afternoon to a convenient location on 11th St. NE

There are many sources for fresh produce these days, but the quality and convenience of Bending Bridge Farm's unique a la carte CSA is hard to beat.   This CSA works for anyone--individuals who travel frequently or large families. The cost to join is only $400 (a pre-payment for veggies to come).

The best part is that your membership fee acts as a debit account with the farm, giving you the flexibility to choose exactly what you want and how often you order. Members choose from a great selection of produce via our web store. If you are out of town for a week or two, you simply have more to spend when you return and you never have to worry about unwanted food going to waste.

All the vegetables we offer are certified organically grown at Bending Bridge Farm in south central PA or at one of the small family farms in Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative.  We also offer a selection of locally produced fruits, preserves, and cheese.

Community Meeting w/ DDOT re: Maryland Ave Pedestrian Safety Project, incl 7th & 10th St intersections Wed. 5/21 at NE Library

Are you concerned about safety at the intersection of 7th/D/Maryland Ave (by the Northeast Library)? About the intersection of 10th/Maryland (by SWS at Goding and Sherwood Rec)? Or the Maryland Ave corridor as a whole? Do you remember a multiyear planning process that produced consensus plans that were supposed to be implemented last fall, but that haven't gone anywhere?  Then this meeting is for you.

BACKGROUND

Since 2010, the DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) has been considering a project to make Maryland Avenue safer for pedestrians and cars, especially at the intersections of Maryland/7th/D and Maryland/10th. 

DDOT identified the preferred design 2 ½ years ago, but it never implemented that design.  It now is considering a new scaled-back plan.  The community will learn about this scaled-back plan at the May 21 meeting.

Wait there’s an art opening on H Street NE?  YES!  Don’t miss it; it’s open until 8 p.m.!  RSP will show Amy Myers' Natural Curve.  In this science meets art exhibition, Myers, the daughter of physicists who grew up hearing the language of theoretical physics, creates work that explores the contractions between form, chaos and chance.  Details and images here.

Honfleur & Vivid Solutions Galleries  6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Anacostia galleries are showing their feminine side this Friday with two concurrent exhibitions by women artists.  In Parallels: Sculptures and Installations, Nara Park uses water as an artistic medium.  Be prepared to see cascades, aquariums and other water features.  Upstairs at Vivid Solutions, in If We Came From Nowhere Here, Why Can’t We Go Somewhere There? artist collective MAMBU BADU explores African identity and “Afro-futurism.”  Exhibition descriptions here.

Volunteer Capitol Hill 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gateway Arts District Open Studio Tour 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

17 venues, 70 studios and over 100 artists— it’s an East City Art reader’s dream!  Officially this is the 10^th anniversary of the event.  Eric Hope has interviewed stakeholders here.  You can’t possibly see it all in one tour which is why we’re thankful it’s an annual event!  All the times, details and listings here.

Additional Artist Open Studios 12 p.m.

There are three other open houses you should know about.  First, the 52 O Street studios will be open to the public all weekend. Next, on Saturday, DC Glassworks will be open for the Gateway Open Studio Tour (above). Lastly, a new artist studio space called “Off the Beaten Track Warehouse” officially opens to the public. Off Rhode Gallery– 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

In a wonderfully refreshing trend, Off Rhode Gallery surprises again with yet another unexpected exhibition this year.  In Wild Ocean: Sharks, Whales, Rays and Other Endangered Sea Creatures, the gallery will exhibit artwork by artist Matt Dembicki who created these works for a graphic novel about the world’s oceans.  Details and images here.

39^th Street Gallery – 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The best part of the Gateway Open Studio Tour is that the art never stops.  Join the 39^th Street Gallery for Mind + Body + Metaphor curated by Martha Jackson Jarvis.  The exhibition by artists Shaunte’ Gates and Nijena Surae Jarvis explores the human body as a metaphor.  Details and images here.

May is National Bike Month and DC Public Libraries are gearing up with bike tours, events, bike-themed storytimes, and reading suggestions.  

A brief roundup of events is below - for more information, links to bike organizations in DC, and good book ideas for bikers and book lovers, check out the DC Public Library website at http://dclibrary.org/bike or check at your local branch.   All events and tours are FREE.

TWO Bike Tours to DC Libraries

**Saturday, May 17th - 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - DC Public Library's 5th annual Tour de DCPL

This year DCPL is proud to announce its official partnership with Black Women Bike, as well as DDOT's Anacostia Waterfront Initiative for the 5th Annual Tour de DCPL.  The ride is a bit more challenging then in past years...about 14 miiles...children 9 and under are encouraged to attend the "Library Lovers Like to Bike" family ride on May 31st (See below).

Check in starts at 9 a.m. at Southeast Library (403 7th Street SE) and the ride starts at 9:30 a.m.  The first leg is a quick ride up 7th Street to Northeast Library (330 7th Street NE).  Then a nice ride to Roosedale Library (1701 Gales Street NE), then on to Deanwood (1350 49th Street NE), followed by Dorothy Height/Benning Library (3935 Benning Road SE), Anacostia Library (1800 Good Hope Road SE) and over the 11th Street bridge and  back to Southeast Library.

**Saturday, May 31st from 9:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - "Library Lovers Like to Bike Kids Tour"

Families with children ages 9 and younger can celebrate National Bike Month with your neighbors and librarians from all Ward 6 DCPL branches -Northeast, Rosedale, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest One.  The event will be held rain or shine, so bring your raingear!

For those meeting at Rosedale Library (1701 Gales Street NE) or Southeast (403 7th Street SE) we'll have bike safety tips from biking police officers and library staff starting at 9:45 a.m. Then we'll ride on over to Northeast Branch (330 7th Street NE) for story-time, bike decorating, repair demos, snacks and more.  

Adult chaperones and helmets are required for all child bikers. All adults will be required to sign liability waivers at for themselves and their children before starting the ride.

PSA104 is the Police Service Area for H Street and the immediate neighborhood.  It covers the area south of Florida Ave and north of Maryland Ave.  PSA104 Lt. Cullen is present for a community meeting each month at the Sherwood Rec Center.  This month's meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 7 per below.


The PSA 104 community meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 7pm at the Sherwood Recreation Center located at 640 10^th Street NE.  All are encouraged to attend.

MPD seeks info on dark gray Honda Accord in hit & run w/cyclist on H Street hopscotch bridge last night

Vehicle of Interest Sought in Hit and Run: 200 Block of H Street, Northeast

                   
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a vehicle of interest in connection with a hit and run involving a bicyclist which occurred in the 200 block of H Street, Northeast.

On Thursday, May 1, 2014, at approximately 9:48 pm, an adult male operating a bicycle was travelling eastbound within the 200 block of H Street, Northeast, near Union Station, when he was struck by a dark grey, four-door, Honda Accord with unknown tags. The vehicle continued eastbound on H Street, NE, failing to stop.

 

Anyone with information about this vehicle or its driver is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.

Capitol Hill Schools To Celebrate Bike-to-School Day

Roll With Us to Lincoln Park and Celebrate How
Biking to School Can Make a Difference in Student Health and Safety

Washington, DC – On Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at 7:30 a.m., students from Capitol Hill schools will gather at Lincoln Park (13^th & East Capitol Streets, SE) to celebrate Bike-to-School Day.

Many Capitol Hill schools will participate and show our school spirit! 

Snacks will be available for riders. Bike trains to schools depart 8:00 and 8:15 AM so we all get to school on time.

Guest speakers and sponsors will round out the Lincoln Park Bike-to-School event.
