About Walk-to-School Day
Walk-to-School Day raises awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasizes the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The event builds connections between families, schools and the broader community.
Now in its 15th year, this one-day event in the U.S. is a part of an international effort in more than 40 countries to celebrate the many benefits of safely walking and bicycling to school and to encourage more families to consider getting out of the car and onto their feet on the way to school in October. In 2012, Walk-to-School Day was celebrated at more than 4,000 events across the United States.

Tommy Wells Chief of Staff Charles Allen leaving DC Council post

Charles has been Chief of Staff to our Ward 6 Councilmember for quite some time now and he's come to be the go to guy for a lot of folks who are working for the betterment of this neighborhood.  Charles has been a partner of ours on many neighborhood projects and has been integrally involved in countless other improvements on and around H Street over the past several years.  He's done a great job for Councilmember Wells and all of us and he will be missed on the D.C. Council.  We look forward to following his next move and are sure he'll continue to contribute greatly to this neighborhood of which his family is a part.  In the meantime, thank you Charles for your strong leadership of Councilmember Wells' office and for all the great work you've done to help this neighborhood continue to become an even better place to live.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Friday, October 4th will be my last day at the Council.

It’s been an honor to work with so many neighbors, leaders, and public servants in my time as Chief of Staff to Councilmember Wells. I’ve loved every minute of it and have met so many incredible people throughout our city. I’ll be leaving to explore new opportunities to serve Ward 6 and the District, but I leave with great pride in the work we’ve done together for the residents, families, and neighborhoods across the ward and city. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with Tommy, our entire team, and all of you.

To stay in touch with me personally, please feel free to use my personal email address – cwallen AT gmail.com.

As our office undergoes this staffing change, I wanted to share the new responsibilities for three members of our staff:

Chief of Staff – Linda O’Brien, lobrien AT dccouncil.us
Legislative Director – Melanie Bates, mbates AT dccouncil.us
Communications Director – Jack Pfeiffer, jpfeiffer AT dccouncil.us

Thank you very much for the opportunities we’ve had together and I look forward to finding new ways to serve our city and communities.

Charles Allen

DPR Offers "DPR Fun Day" During DC Public Schools' Professional Development Days

Select recreation centers will offer enriching activities during the 2013-2014 DCPS school year

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced that during the 2013-2014 school year, when DC Public Schools (DCPS) will be closed for staff development, the agency will offer "DPR Fun Day," a single-day program that offers fun and enriching activities (such as sports and athletics, arts and crafts, and more) to children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. DPR strives to meet the needs of District families when the District's public schools are closed for DCPS Professional Development days.

DPR Fun Day will be offered at select DPR sites on the following three days: Friday, October 18, 2013; Friday, February 14, 2014; and Friday, May 2, 2014.

Starting with the first DCPS closure, 14 DPR sites will offer fun day camps on Friday, October 18, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. DPR Fun Day will incorporate DPR’s “Move, Grow and Be Green” initiative, as DPR continues to plant the seeds of personal development and environmental responsibility.

Sites offering DPR Fun Day include:

Sherwood Recreation Center - 640 10th Street, NE | (202) 698-3075

Children should be sent with their lunch and snacks for the day as DPR staff will not provide these items. Parents are asked to adhere to DPR's policies on food and snacks, which will be available on DPR's website at the time of registration.

Although there is no registration fee for this program, online pre-registration is required.

Registration for each of the 2013-2014 DPR Fun Days will open two weeks prior to each fun day. Therefore, registration for the first fun day will open on Friday, October 4, at 10:00 am. There is no "application" for enrollment, but all registration must be completed online.
Space fills on a first-come, first-served basis and enrollment at each site is subject to availability. It is recommended that parents create an online account for all members of their family in DPR's registration system before the registration period in order to be prepared. Registration closes at 12 pm on Thursday, October 17, 2013.
