Final NoMaBID Summer Screen is tonight (Donnie Darko)

Press release from the NoMaBID:
NoMa Summer Screen Becomes Neighborhood Staple

Now in its third year, the popular NoMa Summer Screen event attracts more than 300 people each week – and dozens of press hits. Residents have flocked from throughout the region for top flicks such as Wall-E, Back to the Future, The Fifth Element, and E.T. The 12-week series ends August 4 with a screening of Donnie Darko.

The NoMa Business Improvement District started the series in 2008 with 16 weeks of James Bond films, followed by an 8-week series themed Music in Pictures. This year’s lineup is a family friendly smattering of popular movies to match the theme The Future is Now, films that grapple with the element of time or the future.

“NoMa Summer Screen continues to outshine our projections, and our residents and neighbors love this event,” said NoMa BID President Liz Price. “NoMa Summer Screen is just one of the many things the BID does to foster a sense of community in this neighborhood.” The movies attract nearby residents, Gallaudet University students, office workers and film enthusiasts of all ages from as far as Hyattsville, Md., and Arlington County, Va. Local bloggers, the Washington Post, DCist, ReadysetDC and others have promoted the series throughout the summer.

So, invite your friends, bring a picnic blanket and cooler, and join us August 4 for Donnie Darko and the last showing of NoMa Summer Screen! Arrive by 8 p.m. for giveaways from local retailers Pound Coffee and Au Bon Pain, and a chance to win DVDs of this season’s films.

The event takes place Wednesday, August 4 from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. at Second and L Streets, NE, courtesy of the Cohen Companies and the Loree Grand at Union Place. The event starts at 7 p.m. with barbecue, Frisbees and DJ music provided by Fatback. Barbecue, including a vegetarian option, is available courtesy of Smokin’ Somethin’. The Sweetflow Mobile truck by Sweetgreen provides salads and frozen yogurt treats with toppings. To see a video of this year’s event, visit www.nomasummerscreen.com.
