Haloween events at the Atlas

The Atlas Performing Arts Center joins in all the H Street Haloween fun with Haloween movies all weekend long. 

Friday night after HollowFest at Sherwood, and the marquee Thriller! performance, head to the Atlas for the legendary horrow film Night of the Living Dead.

On Haloween Sunday itself, the Atlas will be showing creepy classic films all day long.

The Bat featuring Agnes Moorehead from Bewitched at 2 p.m.

House on Haunted Hill with Vincent Price at 3:30 p.m.

Little Shop of Horrors (the original with a young Jack Nicholson) at 5 p.m.

The Brain That Wouldn't Die, a camp classic, at 6:30 p.m.

Admission to each film is only $5 or purchase "the Haloween Four" and get access to the full day of movies for only $10. 

The Atlas also has "Don't Tea on Me!" and "Pirates of Penzance" this weekend.  "Don't Tea on Me!" tickets can be purchased for half off with the code "TEA,"

Arts on H Street this weekend

In addition to Thiller, the great shows and films at the Atlas, and the various other entertainment options, H Street will be home to a series of art open houses this weekend. 

City Gallery (804 H St) hosts a closing reception for M.M. Panas Action Painting on Saturday afternoon from 2 - 6 p.m.

Conner Contemporary (1358 Florida Ave) host an opening reception for Federico Solmi's Douche Bag City on Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m.

Also on Saturday, G Fine Art (1350 Florida Ave) presents the opening reception for Dan Steinhilber’s latest exhibition, Mixed Bag from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Fruit Bat launches Happy Hour & Fall Menu

Fruit Bat (1236 H Street) is now open earlier for a new Happy Hour Tuesday through Friday, from 5:30 - 7 p.m.  They offer $3 Sol beers, $6 wines by the glass, and $2 off all house-infused cocktails. 

They're also launching TACO TUESDAYS with special tacos every Tuesday from 6 p.m. until midnight.

Sherwood Recreation Center Neighborhood Volunteers Beautification Work Session: Saturday, Oct. 30, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

@Bikeshare update

Capital Bikeshare outposts have now been installed at 3rd & H, 13th & H, 13th & D, 13th & North Carolina (Lincoln Park), and along the east and west entrances to Union Station in recent weeks.  One will be installed today at Maryland and Benning (at the Starburst intersection with 15th & H).  Stations are slated for 11th & H and possibly for 6th & H as well.  Bikeshare is offering a discounted annual membership rate of $50 through the end of the month, so if you are interested in signing up, now is the time to act as the price goes up on Monday.

Reminder: Vince Gray at the Atlas tonight

Vince Gray's Ward 6 Town Hall meeting is tonight at the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H St).  The event starts at 6:30.

Councilmember Tommy Wells will host his monthly H Street Community Office Hours at SOVA (1359 H St) this Thursday morning, October 28, from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m.   Come meet Councilmember Wells and his staff to discuss your community concerns and learn about his plans for the neighborhood.  

Tru Orleans (400 H St)

Tru Orleans a New Orleans-style restaurant plans to open at (400 H St).  The owner plans to renovate the existing building at 400 H Street into a New Orleans-style restaurant with an upstairs outdoor roof deck.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served; seating capacity will be approximately 150 people.  Patio seating along 4th Street is a future consideration.  The building will be in the style of a typical New Orleans establishment; the exterior includes extensive metal railing detail like those found in the French Quarter.  

The owner requested for a BZA variance from the floor area requirements, a variance from the off-street parking requirements, and a variance from the loading requirements to allow the renovation an addition to an existing one-story building at 400 H Street.  His application was supported by ANC6C and appears to have been approved.

As previously noted, there is a community meeting about Tru Orleans tonight at Toyland though the precise purpose of the meeting and status of the remains somewhat unclear.

Thriller on H!

Friday, October 29 is Thriller Night! Join Joy of Motion (JOMDC) for a night of thrills, chills and dancing under the stars. The evening begins with a workshop to learn the iconic choreography from Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Participants then will have the opportunity to perform under the stars at the Thriller on H Street Party*, located at 1207 H Street (one block away from JOMDC Atlas in the parking lot adjacent to Auto Zone). Costumes are suggested for participation in the performance. This family friendly event includes a Thriller Video screening and performance, Moonwalk contest, door prizes and more! H Street Shuttle update

The H Street Shuttle nearly lapsed due to lack of funding, but DDOT announced earlier today that it had been extended through at least the end of the year.  Unfortunately, the construction along H Street remains a mess and progress seems to have stalled since the H Street Festival.  Tommy Wells reports that he is working to find funding for the shuttle to continue through at least the end of the construction.

DDOT reports that streetcars will run in 2012, but has not promised whether the shuttle will continue to run in 2011.  Without it, H Street may have to rely on cars, the woefully inadequate X2 bus, or Capitol Bikeshare.  Bikeshare has been installed at 3rd and 13th, but that leaves a significant gap in between, so hopefully the planned installation at 11th & H should help.  Their initial plans stated that one would be installed at 11th & H, but for some reason their proposed locations map no longer lists that stop and instead lists one at 6th St (one was installed at the NE corner of Lincoln Park earlier today).  Hopefully, Councilmember Wells and DDOT will be able to ensure that the shuttle continues at least until construction is complete and perhaps until the streetcars are up in running in March 2012.

Don't Tea on Me!

Yesterday's Washington Post has this piece on Gross National Product's latest show "Don't Tea on Me," which opens tonight at the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H St).  The show is a mix of skits and improv and is largely a paraody of some aspects of the Tea Party movement.

GNP has planned a "a fake Tea Party rally" tonight in front of the Atlas at 6:30 p.m.  The rally is free and the show will run weekends through the election until November 6.

DDOT: Streetcars on track for early 2012

DDOT has released this updated streetcars plan.  This was requested by the Council in order for them to release the next round of funding to get the streetcars running on H Street in early 2012.

Campaign Statement of Drew Ronneberg (ANC6A02)

To the residents of ANC 6A02:

I was elected as ANC 6A02 Commissioner in February after working for 7 years as a citizen volunteer and 4 years as Chairman of the Economic Development and Zoning Committee.  Many times, I have been asked by residents to explain what our ANC does. The ANC is the voice of the community and weighs in on issues like liquor licenses, zoning and economic development, as well as parking restrictions, traffic calming and other measures. We also advise the City Council and DC agencies on pending legislation and regulations.

Since moving to my current residence in 2001, I have witnessed how ANC 6A has made a difference in our neighborhood. For example, our ANC contributed heavily to the H Street Strategic Plan and H Street Transportation Study which helped attract private investments in new restaurants and bars as well as public investments in the H Street streetscape and streetcar system. In addition, ANC 6A successfully advocated for banning the sale of “ singles” on H Street -- a policy that has reduced loitering and public drinking within our neighborhood.  We have a number of exciting developments over the next few years in our neighborhood, including:

1. There will be 3 restaurants in 6A02 (Smith Commons at 1245 H St NE, Kahn’ s (Mongolian) BBQ at 1125 H St NE and The Atlas Room at 1015 H St NE by the end of the year.

2. A Capitol Bikeshare station will be installed at 11th and H in the next few months.

3. The H Street streetscape construction will be completed in 2011.

4. The Streetcar will start running in 2012.

5. The H street Connection strip mall will be redeveloped as a multi-story mixed use building with underground parking.

6. The sale of the Autozone site is pending.

As a citizen volunteer and now as ANC Commissioner, I have worked hard to make our neighborhood a better place: Examples of my accomplishments include:

1. The H Street Connection Redevelopment (801 H St NE): For the last 3 years, I led the negotiations for the proposed redevelopment of the H Street Connection site. The new building has a high quality, pedestrian and transit friendly urban design which will replace the current strip mall. I strongly believe that the new building will attract new residents and businesses and will help catalyze the redevelopment of the central part of the H Street Corridor.

2. Police Station Redevelopment (525 9th St NE). I worked with the builder and immediate neighbors to ensure that restoration of this long neglected building will cause the least disruption to the neighborhood. I am also pleased that this project is finally coming to fruition -- ANC 6A has advocated for rehabilitation of the building (as well as the Old Fire Station on Maryland Ave) for more than 5 years.

3. Vacant Properties. I led the identification and reporting of vacant properties in 6A02 and the rest of the ANC for two years. Many of the worst vacant properties in our SMD (e.g. 637 10th St NE, 612 11th St NE) have been redevelop and reoccupied. I will work to ensure that other vacant properties like 1203 Linden Place and 701 10th St NE are taxed at the vacant property rate to incentivize the reoccupation of these buildings.

If I am re-elected as your Commissioner, I will:
 
1. Increase available parking for residents by a) working with the police and H Street bars and restaurants to ensure that valets do not use neighborhood streets for parking; b) helping residents restrict parking on affected neighbor streets to resident-only parking; and c) working with parking enforcement to ensure that parking restrictions are enforced on neighborhood streets.

2. Implement traffic calming on residential streets. Since Constitution Ave was converted to two-way traffic, more commuter traffic has been pushed into residential neighborhoods. I will work with community aend DDOT to get stop signs and speed humps installed in order to slow commuter traffic.

3. Continue to advocate for appropriate development on H Street. For example, the empty lot at 1113-1117 H St NE will soon be surplussed by the City and sold to a private developer. I will work to ensure that the new development contributes to a vibrant and pedestrian friendly streetscape and that the new structure complements H Street’ s historic buildings. In addition, while H St has become a destination for restaurants and bars, we need more neighborhood-serving retail or risk being a nightlife-only Corridor. I believe a cap on the number of H Street liquor licenses (based on a number higher than what is currently permitted), should be considered by ANC 6A.

4. Continue to work with Lieutenant Parker and other PSA 102 police officers to make our neighborhood safer. Although crime in our neighborhood is down 50% compared to last year, I would like to encourage all residents of 6A02 to attend PSA 102 meetings and join the MPD-1D listserve.

5. Increase community involvement in the Sherwood Recreation Center. The Sherwood Recreation Center is a valuable resource that is currently underutilized by residents of 6A02. Recently, neighbors have organized an effort to beautify the Center’ s grounds and become more involved in its operations and upkeep. I will work with these volunteers to increase neighborhood utilization of the Sherwood Recreation Center.

6. Increase the number of citizen volunteers in ANC 6A. I started out as a citizen volunteer and much of our ANC’ s effectiveness is due to dedication and expertise of its citizen volunteers. If you want to get involved, please let me know.

Red Palace announced a slight delay in reopening.  The bars at the Palace of Wonders and Red and the Black remain open with sideshows and beers (and without long lines) in the interim. 

ANC6A opted to protest the renewal of the liquor license for Twelve Nightclub & Lounge. 

The Wall Street Journal touted Councilmember Tommy Wells' bag tag as model legislation for the extent to which it has affected peoples' willingness to use plastic bags.  The bill has generated less revenue through the $.05 fee than expected, but this is because more people have passed on bags than anticipated and the bill has thus been more effective than hoped because the goal was to reduce the use of plastic bags and the subsequent litter problems that plagued our rivers. 

Ward 6 Dems announced a forum with Council Chair-to-be Kwame Brown tonight from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Southeast Branch Public Library, 403 7th Street, SE.  HSGS is a cosponsor of this event.

Capitol Bikeshare on H Street

Capital Bikeshare arrived on H Street recently with its first station at 1300 H Street and another at 3rd and H.  A bikeshare station was also been planned for 11th and H and the current bikeshare map shows one proposed for 6th and H as well, but locations for bikeshare installations appear to be somewhat in flux (there is an ongoing debate over where Lincoln Park's will be located) so it is somewhat unclear where H Street's next station will land.

H Street Development Update (progress along the eastern end)

The plans for the Arboretum Place have become the Flats at the Atlas District and have broken ground.  This mixed use building will be located at 1600 Maryland Ave. just across the Starburst intersection from the eastern end of the H Street Corridor.

Construction is moving along at the old Police Station at 525 9th St and also the old Fire House at 1341 Maryland Ave.  The new buildings will be called the Station and The Engine House.  The tuckpointing of the Station is nearly complete and the building already looks great from the outside.  Construction is expected to continue well into next year. 

Movement has finally begun on the vacant lots at 1113-1117 H Street.  The property is to be surplussed by the city, which will allow Stan Wall to begin to finalize his plans for a 16 unit development with ground floor retail.  There will be a public meeting on the plans to surplus the building on November 10, at the Sherwood Recreation Center (640 10th St NE).  Wall will also attend the ANC6A Economic Development and Zoning Committee hearing on October 20 to begin discussions about his plans and designs for the new building. 

Finally, the Autozone site at 1207 H Street is pending sale to Western Development.  Though Autozone's current lease has yet to expire this represents a very exciting development as the property is one of the most readily developable plots along the eastern end of H Street, but is currently put to poor use.  Western Development has done a number of big projects in the DC area, including Gallery Place, the Washington Harbour, and Georgetown Park.

WP Dining Guide (@tomsietsema) honors Ethiopic on H Street

Washington Post Food Critic's Fall Dining Guide is in this Sunday's newspaper and available online now.  The Guide mostly features Washington's very best of fine dining with the Inn at Little Washington, Citronlle, Komi, Rasika, Restaurant Eve, and Palena making regular appearances. 

This Fall, the Dining Guide also includes H Street's Ethiopic (401 H St).  Among the details that Sietsema says sets Ethiopic apart from dozens of other Ethiopian spots around town are his favorite dishes: the 'fasting egg' (spicy chickpea appetizer that resembles scrambled eggs), the signature lamb tibs, and the vegetarian sampler.  Congratulations to Sam and Meseret on this well-deserve recognition!  Ethiopic is putting out some really fantastic food right now. 

Meet the new Chair

On Tuesday, October 19, the Ward 6 Democrats will host a special Forum with Kwame Brown, the next Chair of the DC Council at the Southeast Branch Public Library (403 7th St SE), from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.  If you have not had the opportunity to meet Councilmember Brown, this is a great opportunity to do so and to make sure that the Council's next Chairman will be looking out for H Street and Ward 6's priorities on the Council.  The Forum is cosponsored by H Street Great Street, the Hill Rag, the Hill is Home, and other community groups. 

In January, Councilmember Kwame Brown will take over the helm of the Council of the District of Columbia.  Join our next Chairman, along with several of his At-Large Council colleagues and Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells, for a conversation about the future of the Council and DC.  This is a good opportunity to ask about how the Council will keep education reform a priority for years to come and to find out what Councilmember Brown has planned for the Council to support the continued growth of H Street NE?  Councilmember Brown kept his campaign offices on H Street during each of his past two elections and was a visible presence on H Street much of this summer.  If you did not have the chance to meet him, be sure to stop by to hear about why he is excited about H Street and what his plans are to help further growth and progress in the District.
