The Washington Post provides it Best Bets on H Street with a great guide to a dozen of H Street's best businesses. It's amazing when H Street has come so far that Granville Moore's and the Argonaut could be left off a list of a dozen great things to do on H Street... It is nice to the Washington Post recognizing the H Street neighborhood as one of DC's best.

DCFoodies reviews Dr. Granville Moore's. DC Foodies says Granville Moore's may be DC's best bar. They are well-known for their award-winning mussles, but the Belgian beer list is as fine as any in Washington and the kitchen's other offerings -- from bison steaks to lamb sandwiches are truly delicious as well.

Mike Neibauer notes in the WBJ that H Street Main Street Executive Director Anwar Saleem has not paid his DC property taxes for the past two years, owes over $20,000 to DC, and will have his properties at 1005 H Street and 1017 H Street auctioned at DC's tax sale next month if he does not pay them prior to then.

At-large Council Candidate Clark Ray launched an ad that starts with footage of him on H Street talking about his hope to see streetcars in place asap and how Phil Mendelson has worked to slow them down. Lydia DePillis takes a look at the ad on City Paper's Housing Complex and concludes that those of us who are eager to see our streetcars on H Street (and elsewhere) have "essentially won" because "That’s what political power is: When elections become about your issues." It's great to see Clark Ray joining Tommy Wells, Kwame Brown, and Mayor Fenty in strongly advocating for the H Street streetcar line.

DCmud takes a look at the ongoing redevelopment projects at "The Station" (525 9th St) and "The Enginge House" (1341 Maryland Ave). While some of H Street's bigger redevelopments like the H Street Connection and the Steuart Development have yet to break ground, these two residential buildings are moving steadily ahead currently.

Frozen Tropics notes that Evolve has purchased the buildings located at 1344-48 H St and intends to move their corporate headquarters into the smaller building to the west and to renovated the larger one for use as a restaurant. The larger building mirrors the design of and shares a wall with the building at 1350 H Street, where Joe Englert plans to open his Italian restaurant Vendetta.

Thrillist does a quick video of the Build Your Own Cocktail option at H Street's news restaurant/cocktail lounge Fruit Bat. Fruit Bat has its own creative cocktail list as well as mojitos and caiprinas, but encourages you to pick a base and a fresh fruit and let them create something special to suit your individual tastes. Stay tuned for more on Fruit Bat here soon. Our early visits suggest Fruit Bat will be a very welcome addition to H Street and that its South American street fare is as tasty as its creative cocktail offerings.

The Hill is Home has the performance line up for the stages at each end of the H Street Festival. It's going to be even bigger and better than last year. Saturday, September 18, starting at noon.

WP: Best Bets on H Street

Tomorrow's Washington Post will feature H Street. The piece highlights: Ethiopic, Studio H, Toyland, Liberty Tree, Little Miss Whiskey's Golden Dollar, Sticky Rice, the Atlas Performing Arts Center, Star and Shamrock, Rock and Roll Hotel, Biergarten Haus, Conner Contemporary, and SOVA.

H Street has become more than a strip of late-night bars: There's dance, cutting-edge art and even a kid-friendly wine bar. We know we've written a lot about H Street, and if you're a savvy Washingtonian, you've probably putt-putted past zombie presidents at the H Street Country Club and grabbed a pie to go from Dangerously Delicious. But there's more to H Street than novelty stops. (follow link for full feature)

Community Nights at Biergarten Haus

Biergarten Haus willl begin hosting "Community Nights" on Wednesdays when they will offer 10% discounts to residents of 20002 and 20003 zip codes. Biergarten Haus hosts Beer Week with Kolsch Firkin tonight at 7

Biergarten Haus hosts Beer Week tonight with Reissdorf Kolsch Firkins and Beermaster Bill Catron.

Firkins are beers that are "unpasteurized, unfiltered, and naturally carbonated, or conditioned, in its cask."

Should be another fun DC Beer Week event as the week's festivities on H Street come to a close.

Catron is one of a small number of Americans to be knighted by La Chevalerie du Fourquet des Brasseurs, or the Knighthood of Brewers’ Mashstaffs, and previously produced the award winning beer list at Brasserie Beck.

Link roundup

DCUrbanTurf takes a look at the Loree Grand, which is the newly opened apartment building at 250 K Street.  It looks like a great addition to the neighborhood!

DCUrbanTurf also reported that DC-area houses are selling faster and for more money than they did a year ago. This is certainly fits with what we have seen anecdotally in our area along the H Street corridor.

DCist checked out the Temporium before its final weekend.

Thrillist is was excited for last week's H Street Eats. Early reports are that H Street patrons and businesses had a very successful and enjoyable week.

Fruit Bat officially opened at 1236 H St. City Paper, The Hill is Home, We Love DC, and Frozen Tropics are all pretty excited about it. So are we. Great craft cocktails and great South American street food at very reasonable prices.

TBD reported that the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities has selected D.C. sculptor Wilfredo Valladares to design a series of eight totem poles to fill the empty space on the 300 block of H Street this fall, part of the commission's ongoing "Pop-Up Public Art Project" series.  The new pop up art exhibit is to be installed prior to next month's H Street Festival.

Tommy Wells launched some ads in support of his re-election campaign, including one on H Street. Tommy said he's
"really excited about the future of H Street" noting that "there's nothing else quite like this in DC." Wells promised to remain engaged on H Street to see the ongoing progress through with tax incentives and other efforts to help further H Street's "great pedestrian feel." Thanks, Tommy!  We are counting on you and excited to see what we are able to accomplish in your next term.

Greater Greater Washington asks what Vince Gray was thinking when he yanked funding for streetcars during the Council's budget debate earlier this year.  Gray's answer: "staff error."
DC Beer Week kicked off over the weekend and included a multi-course meal from Chef Teddy Folkman at Granville Moore's last night. Tonight H Street Country Club hosts Harpoon Pints for Putts – The shot of your life. 1 Beer. 1 Putt. 120 feet. Sink it and walk away with a regulation totally sick $3000 Pool Table! and Star and Shamrock teams up with He’brew Ales for “Brisket & Brews.” Join Shmaltz Brewing Company, Star and Shamrock along with tasty He’Brew Ales for some creative pairings.  Little Miss Whiskey's has Food and Beer Pairing with w/ Chef Adam Stein from the coming soon Queen Vic with four courses for $20.  Liberty Tree has an exciting four course affair planned for tomorrow. Beer Week is ongoing citywide, but H Street is the symbolic home with many of the week's top events.

Capitol City Symphony 2010-2011 schedule

CAPITAL CITY SYMPHONY 2010-2011 Season

Washington, D.C. (July 30, 2010) -- The Capital City Symphony, the resident orchestra at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, has an exciting line-up planned for its 2010-2011 season, including their popular Family Concert in November and the FREE Community Carol Sing in December. Enjoy high-quality music at a fraction of the cost of other venues!

Their 43rd season will highlight what the Capital City Symphony does best: make music approachable by presenting affordable concerts to the public, performing creative programs in a relaxed concert format, and providing appealing performance opportunities for talented amateur as well as professional players.

On September 25, there will be a pre-season Special Event: an encore performance of Symphony Lounge, featuring Charlie Barnett's cool jazz band, Chaise Lounge, along with the full Capital City Symphony. This concert will also include a reprise of the Orchestral Suite "The Tarot" by Charlie Barnett, which was premiered by CCS in March. Two of the Capital City Symphony's annual favorites are the the Family Concert and the Carol Sing Concert. The Capital City Symphony's spring concerts on March 20 and May 8 will include such stirring works as Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.

Children 16 and under are FREE for all main season Capital City Symphony concerts. The orchestra's youngest audience members particularly enjoy the annual Family Concert, with its instrument petting zoo and interactive concert, including a special program book just for the younger set. Due to popular demand, a second performance will once again be offered this season.

All concerts are held at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H Street NE, Washington, DC. Special Event tickets are $20-$30 (no discounts). Final NoMaBID Summer Screen is tonight (Donnie Darko)

Press release from the NoMaBID:
NoMa Summer Screen Becomes Neighborhood Staple

Now in its third year, the popular NoMa Summer Screen event attracts more than 300 people each week – and dozens of press hits. Residents have flocked from throughout the region for top flicks such as Wall-E, Back to the Future, The Fifth Element, and E.T. The 12-week series ends August 4 with a screening of Donnie Darko.

The NoMa Business Improvement District started the series in 2008 with 16 weeks of James Bond films, followed by an 8-week series themed Music in Pictures. This year’s lineup is a family friendly smattering of popular movies to match the theme The Future is Now, films that grapple with the element of time or the future.

“NoMa Summer Screen continues to outshine our projections, and our residents and neighbors love this event,” said NoMa BID President Liz Price. “NoMa Summer Screen is just one of the many things the BID does to foster a sense of community in this neighborhood.” The movies attract nearby residents, Gallaudet University students, office workers and film enthusiasts of all ages from as far as Hyattsville, Md., and Arlington County, Va. Local bloggers, the Washington Post, DCist, ReadysetDC and others have promoted the series throughout the summer.

So, invite your friends, bring a picnic blanket and cooler, and join us August 4 for Donnie Darko and the last showing of NoMa Summer Screen! Arrive by 8 p.m. for giveaways from local retailers Pound Coffee and Au Bon Pain, and a chance to win DVDs of this season’s films.

The event starts at 7 p.m. with barbecue, Frisbees and DJ music provided by Fatback. Barbecue, including a vegetarian option, is available courtesy of Smokin’ Somethin’.
